In 1949, Professor Rudenko began an excavation in Pazyryk (in the Altai Mountains of Siberia). In Amidst, the frozen tombs, he discovered a piece of pile rug. This amazing piece which is now the oldest pile-knotted rug in the world is called Pazyryk and was woven 2500 years ago based on the radiocarbon experiment!! The size of this rug is 183 by 200 cm (6’ by 6’7”). In the center, there are a few rows of stars with four points that are related to various patterns excavated in Iran (Persia).

This rug is kept in a vacuum condition in the Leningrad Museum. There are different views regarding the origin of this rug. Some researchers believe that the origin of this rug can be North West of Iran (Azarbaijan) but the exact origin of this amazing rug is a mystery.

Pazyryk is an impressive, high density and intricate rug which has its own interesting history and features. Please see the photos and enjoy seeing the oldest Persian rug in the world.
